Vmware macosx

Hi Guys

does anyone have a ‘working’ macosx vmware instance ? i.e. you have
the networking working ok so you can use ichat.

would love to use macosx and textmate for RoR development but I dont
fancy parting with > $US1,500 for a new Mac that is half the speed,
one quarter the RAM and a fraction of the HD of my current PC.

I’m sorry to say that I don’t think this can legally be done, even if
you pay for a license of Mac OS X. I’m pretty sure the license
agreement doesn’t allow it.

But since you asked, the only VMWare version I have ever seen was
Tiger, and it was so slow that you couldn’t call it ‘working’ even
though the networking did function.

Sorry I can’t help more. There are lot’s of plugins for other text
editors that make them ‘textmate-like’. If that isn’t good enough,
then I suggest you keep your eyes on craigslist for a used mac.

I m sure “someone” has, but not me :slight_smile:

Aside from legal issues and whatnot, and that you are in the wrong
forum, I would suggest buying an ebay Intel Mac Mini. Is what I did and
it allows me to use OSX as I need it, and maintain some expertise on it
for servicing customer´s macs in mixed networks, and poke around on
Xcode, RoR and the like without messing up my Windows development VMs.

It is illegal yes. Only MacOS X Server can be virtualized on Mac
servers IIRC, everything else is just plainly illegal.

It’s bound to be slow, every desktop OS within a virtual machine is
bound to be a lot slower than the real thing (bridging of graphics,
network, …). There are hackintosh macos x images floating around, but
from what I’ve heard, they work… kinda… sometimes… if you’re
lucky. It seems that just putting expensive components in a box full
of noisy fans doesn’t cut it for running OS X.

I do believe that there’s a lot more that gives TextMate the upper
hand, not in the least having MacOS X and it’s unix underpinnings.
