Hi. I seem able to connect to a mysql db on a remote server if I have
mysql installed on my local machine. When I don’t have mysql installed
on the local machine it won’t work.
Is their a way to connect to a mysql server on a remote machine without
having mysql installed on the local machine?

You need at least the MySQL client package installed, so technically
the answer is “no”. If you mean “without running a database server
locally”, then the answer is yes.
