Ruby issue : mixing Hash and Array

I have been trying to set up an hash without any success ::
here is what I tested (I splitted it to detail my understanding or
error…)

h = {“2008” => []} => {“2008”=>[]}
months = Array.new(12, []) => [[], [], [], [], [], [], [], [],
[], [], [], []]

h[‘2008’] = months => => [[], [], [], [], [], [], [], [], [], [],
[], []]

days = Array.new(31, 1)

=> 1

it seems that the 1 is set in ALL months arrays not ONLY in [2]
I would like to have a 2 dimensional array ( 12 months 0-11 x 31 days
0-31) , with all values set to 0 and being able to
set the status of a specific date to 1 , (creating the hash for the
year if it’s not already existing)

ex : date 2008, November 8
will create a hash with key ‘2008’ and an array (12x31) where
h[‘2008’][10][7] = 1

ex : date 2008, November 15
will modify the array (12x31) at h[‘2008’][10][7] = 1
( h[‘2008’] already exist)

date 2009, December 24
will create a hash with key ‘2008’ and an array (12x31) where
h[‘2009’][11][23] = 1

is ther a simpler way to do it ?

This is an Array with 12 copies (references) to the same empty array.
You probably want to use the block form for the initialization:
months = Array.new(12) { [] }
or
months = Array.new(12) { Array.new }

h[‘2008’] = months => => [[], [], [], [], [], [], [], [], [], [],
[], []]

This could have been inlined as:

h = {‘2008’ => Array.new(12){[]} }

(if you don’t mind the punctuation train in there)

days = Array.new(31, 1)
=> [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1,
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]

This is the same, but since 1 is a Fixnum and they are “special” by
virtue of being an immediate value, each element is actually its own
value.

Did you forget a step? h[‘2008’][2] = days

Wow, you’re asking a bunch of different things. Let’s break them down:

creating the hash for the year if not already existing

That’s possible using the block form of Hash initialization. Let’s
assume that there will be a method called empty_year which gives you
the 12x31 array of 0 (even though I suspect you’ll really want nil
rather than 0).

h = Hash.new {|h,k| h[k] = empty_year }

a 2 dimensional array ( 12 months 0-11 x 31 days 0-31)

Well, that’s a 12x32 array if you want to index by the day number, but
anyway… Let’s wrap that up in our empty_year method:

def empty_year
Array.new(12) { Array.new(31) { 0 } }
end

(and you’d have to put the definition of empty_year earlier than the
initialization of the Hash)

and being able to set the status of a specific date to 1

Hmm… You skip over how you get from “2008 November 8” to the index
values so let’s tackle that one first:

require ‘date’
d = Date.parse(‘2008 November 8’)

Now you can:

h[d.year.to_s][d.month - 1][d.day - 1] = 1

Whoa! That’s ugly. Perhaps we need a method on h that let’s us hide
those details.

def h.add_date(parseable_date)
d = Date.parse(parseable_date)
self[d.year.to_s][d.month-1][d.day-1] = 1
self
end

Then we can just do:

h.add_date(‘2008 November 15’)

You could define a class called, say, Calendar, that had add_date as
an instance method, too.

If you put all of this together (in irb), you get:

$ irb
irb> require ‘date’
=> true
irb> def empty_year
irb> Array.new(12) { Array.new(31) { 0 } }
irb> end
=> nil
irb> h = Hash.new {|h,k| h[k] = empty_year }
