I’d love to be able to go to a Ruby conference, but 350$ is somewhat
outside my price range as a full time student. Are there any
programs available for students to get a discount to attend such
meetings?
Thanks for your time,
Brandon W.

There are occasional free conferences (and “unconferences”). For
instance, here in Northern Virginia, we have RubyDCamp coming up at
the end of the month, and the Arlington Ruby Meetup has started
putting on unconferences every several months or so. If the
“keystone” reference in your username is Pennsylvania (the Keystone
State), you might be able to make it down here for those. (Except
that this year’s DCamp is full, with probably a long waiting list
already.)
Start by getting active in your local Ruby community, assuming there
is one. Not only can they help you learn, but also they can clue in
to nearby free (or at least cheap) conferences.

Keystone is a reference to the ski resort in Colorado, a normal addition
to
my alias if Lemur is already taken. Lemur comes from the animal, and its
base (Wikipedia): The word “lemur” derives from the word

I currently live in Joplin Missouri, so the nearest area is Tulsa
Oklahoma
about 2.25 hours away. I’m actually currently working on getting a Ruby
group together in the area in relation to a class I’ll be teaching on
Ruby.
At this point I’m looking to just find professional conferences where I
can
meet other people, especially ones with vastly more experience than
myself.
It’s always entertaining to meet someone like that with more experience,
just to get their insight and wisdom on the subject.
