Royal install screwup help

Hello,

I am attempting to get redmine (http://www.redmine.org/) working. I
installed ruby from source and rails according to the directions at
Ruby on Rails — A web-app framework that includes everything needed to create database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern., installed redmine, and used the
webrick command:

ruby /home/sites/web37/web/helpdesk/redmine-0.5.0/script/server -e
production

It worked like a charm.

Then I attempted to get it working in apache. rpm showed that it
wasn’t isntalled properly, so I used smart to install the newest
version. After following a bazillion guides, I think I should have it
working, but it keeps spitting out strange errors. When I try to re-
run the webrick command, it displays a 500 application error (rails).
I uninstall and reinstall a few times to no avail. I also did an in-
place reinstall of ruby on rails.

Now when I load webrick, I get the redmine page, but minus all
formatting and graphics (it’s just a text page). A screenshot is at:

I’ve clearly made a real mess of things and don’t know where to go
from here. I’m ok nuking everything and starting over, but since I
compiled from source, I’m not sure how to do that. Any suggestions?
