ROR host: dreamhost or godaddy?

hi all,

i am looking for a host for my ROR web app. the target audience will be
70% from mainland china, and 30% from the rest of the world.

i dont want a chinese hosst because:

  1. it’s very slow for the rest of the world to access to it.
  2. the speed is quite ok for china to access the us sites.

both dreamhost and godaddy provide similar budget plans, and i saw them
all from this forum, people talk about it with positive feedback too. i
am looking for an under $10 plan per month.

all i want is:

  1. a smooth deployment, not hard to setup
  2. ok speed from china
  3. good support
  4. relieable

guys, please give me some idea to make up my mind.

thank you.

You may want to try railsplayground! They are awesome and have similar
budget plans. I would personally stay away from GoDaddy - as I didn’t
have a favorable experience with them plus no shell access.

I’m currently using Dreamhost for some of my Rails needs. They’re
pretty
good and as Michael said - I’d stay away from GoDaddy. Their customer
service is horrible. I can’t, though, speak about the quality of
Dreamhost’s connection quality in China.

If you search the list for GoDaddy you are likely to find very few
success stories and many painful experiences. Dreamhost has a couple
of praises but has seen its fair share of horror stories as well.
Railsplayground is my host too (wonderful service) so I recommend
them. Others are using Rails Machine is pretty slick… but they are
sold out. Engine Y. is probably another good place to check out.

Dreamhost is great… I don’t host anything that is mission critical on
a
shared host… but for blogs, small sites, svn repos, etc, you can’t
beat
it.

Railsplayground is really nice with awesome support. I like Dreamhost’s
configuration system much better though.

thanks everybody.

railsplayground seems very dedicated to ROR, but they do not do domain
name reg, i need a domain name too, any recommendations?

Actually, I use GoDaddy for all of my domain registrations. You don’t
have
to register your domain at the same place you host. GoDaddy has good
prices
and you don’t need awesome support for registrations.

Register with Godaddy or whoever else. You need to pick a registrar
that
allows enough control over your nameserver settings.
Use A2Hosting.com. Their service is excellent, price is great.
I"m using vhost w/ ssh and I’m very happy. Even had a chat session with
customer service to solve a typo install problem and they were very
helpful.

My only issue with Godaddy is that getting separated nameserver & MX
settings required setting up the free “hosted” site and then using the
Total
Domain Control widget to point the server settings to everywhere else.
It’s
a little weird, but seems to work ok.

I’ve recently set up a Hosting Rails (www.hostingrails.com) account.
Definitely rails-centric, good tutorials, and forums that they wrote in
Rails, so you know they have real hands-on Rails experience. Been real
happy so far.

Domains are easy enough to register yourself through a registrar.
However, if you sign up for the Free After Rebate plan, you end up
getting a free domain name registered for you automatically via
Dreamhost (it’s kinda convoluted, but it works).

+1 for A2Hosting.com. I prefer deploying on a VPS or dedicated
server, but for shared hosts a2hosting is very good, great support
and very fast servers.

again, thanks guys.

if my site is going to handle some simple image processing, like
thumnail for the user, combining images into one, converting text to
image. i m gonna need RMagick, is it possible to install that with
shared hosting?

so far, i’ve only seen www.hostingrails.com is mentioning that.

thanks.

Dreamhost has the rmagick (1.10.1) gem installed already. It is possible
to install your own gems too, the wiki page has more information :
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Ruby_on_Rails

Chris

railsplayground also supports rmagick. I am using it on my projects.

I think A2 will allow RMagick.

I’m using the lastest RMagick version on a2hosting, I needed
FeedTools too (which wasn’t installed), a quick support ticket and
half an hour later it was installed. It’s mentioned in their FAQs, I
believe.

I’ve already checked and A2 has RMagick.

I also highly recommend A2. Their service has been excellent.

Steelpixel (http://hosting.steelpixel.com) has been outstanding. Great
service and support – fairly easy to deploy Rails applications. They
also have RMagick available as well as a number of other gems.

I just recently migrated my rails app to a budget Dreamhost account –
it was a pretty hassle free experience.

domaindiscover.com has a nice interface for setting up your DNS
records. I’m not affiliated with them or any other registrar, but I
use them for several domains and have been happy.

I’m sure that there are dozens of others like this who have better
controls than GoDaddy.
