Wouldn’t setting your proxy timeouts low solve this scenario? If there is an application server with poor >performance, it will be marked as failed and nginx will divert requests to your other 10/100/1000 servers.

No because we are dealing in tiny ms here that is still in the
acceptable range. If upstreams x and y are serving requests in 3ms, but
z is serving them in 50ms, I don’t want z off line because that is still
acceptable and better than having the box offline. However for maximum
performance I’d rather ‘fair’ send requests only to x and y,
occassinoally checking z to see if it comes back in line with response
times of x.
