Rdoc-data install problem

This is my first post here and Im starting with Ruby only now.

I installed ruby using command

“apt-get install ruby1.9.1”

and then I installed rdoc using

“gem install rdoc”

it installed rdoc and rdoc-data gem and asked me to run rdoc-data
–install for generating ri doc for stdlib and core libraries.
But when I ran rdoc-data --install I get following message:

and when I run “ri” command I get only RDoc classes and none of the core
classes. If I run “ri string”, all I get is “Nothing know about String”

Please help me…

rdoc does not depend on the rdoc-data gem, so you probably installed it
separately.

The post-install message for rdoc states:

Depending on your version of ruby, you may need to install ruby rdoc/ri data:

= 1.9.1 : gem install rdoc-data; rdoc-data --install

It looks like this installed Ruby 1.9.2, not ruby 1.9.1, which does not
need rdoc-data per the post-install message from rdoc above. Ruby 1.9.2
includes documentation that is supported by the latest versions when
built from source.

Since you used apt-get to install ruby perhaps you need to install a
separate package to get ri data?

I don’t use Debian so I don’t know.

Thanks for your help. But as you said 1.9.2 does not need rdoc-data gem.
And I couldnt figure out how to generate documentation for it since I
installed via apt-get. So what I did is I cleaned all instances of ruby
and cleaned everything and I installed ruby via rvm. and used rvm to
generate the docs. Now ri works fine. Thanks a lot!!!
