Problems installing on Fedora

Hello everyone,
I am new to Ferret and new to this mailing list. I am having a problem
installing.

sudo gem install ferret
Attempting local installation of ‘ferret’
Local gem file not found: ferret*.gem
Attempting remote installation of ‘ferret’
Updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org
Building native extensions. This could take a while…
can’t find header files for ruby.
ERROR: While executing gem … (RuntimeError)
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.
Gem files will remain installed in
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.9.3for inspection.
ruby extconf.rb install ferret\n
Results logged to
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.9.3/ext/gem_make.out

After that I thought that maybe the c extensions just didn’t compile but
then I tried to fire up irb…
irb(main):001:0> require ‘ferret’
LoadError: no such file to load – ferret
from (irb):1:in require' from (irb):1 irb(main):002:0> require 'rubygems' => true irb(main):003:0> require 'ferret' LoadError: no such file to load -- ferret from /usr/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:21:in require__’ from
/usr/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:21:in `require’
from (irb):3

This machine is a brand new installation of Fedora Core 5. I also just
installed ruby and gem. Am I missing a library somewhere? Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Regards,
John

Hi John,

You’re missing the ruby header files, ie ruby.h. I’m guessing Fedora
doesn’t come with ruby-devel installed by default. (I use Ubuntu). Try
installing the RPM from here;

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=ruby-devel

Or perhaps this will do the job;

sudo yum install ruby-devel

Please let us know if you get it working.

Cheers,
Dave

That was it, Dave. Thanks!
