Maybe you can use print css value in your layout?

In that css you can define which parts should be printed

I find this to be a very good way.

You can take a look at:
http://www.t-engine.info/en/spec/t-kernel/1.00/tkernel_os/task_management/tk_cre_tsk/
and then see the Print Preview in the browser.
