New Rails App : Pazap.com

Hi, thought I’d share with you my project.

It wouldn’t be possible without the help of this forum over the last
year - Thank you. I’m proof you don’t have to be smart to make something
happen in RoR, just drive and caring is all you need.

The best words of advice for any newbie: learn only what you need to get
your thing done, if you try to learn everything, you will drown and be
frustrated.

On Pazap.com:
Notice the extensive use of scriptaculous all over.
And the power of Rails partials used as the search in different layouts.

Here’s a demo screencast of it in action:

If you have any questions as to how I did anything on the site, please
ask.

congrats and thank you for your enthusiasm.

I like your business idea, but If you don’t mind, I’d suggest that
you hookup with a designer. A designer can take a good idea and make
it sing.

bonne chance.

Yes, I 1000% agree with you, the design looks really really bad. But
nice idea tho!

Hey Dominic,

I like your site. Good job.

A question out of interest: How did you do the effect that the
background freezes and turns dark when you click on the report bug link
on the front page. I’ve seen that feature on Google Docs, too.

Cheers,

Markus

Markus, I used this plugin:
http://www.craigambrose.com/redbox_demo

if you’re going to use it, and you put a form inside the popup, it will
not work on IE 6, so for those users it just lands on a regular html
page.

I will consult with designers on it. I personally think the concept of
the design is neat, and it’s there, just needs to be tweaked out. Thanks
for the feedback guys.

Thanx for the info. Will try it out sometime. People who use IE don’t
deserve to visit my site, anyways (-:

Hi Mark. Please check the site again (and refresh in case your browser
cached old images). If I can get just one really bad instead of two, I
know I will have made progress… -Dominic

There are a number of solutions for this modal box behaviour – I’m
using Control.Modal (http://livepipe.net/projects/control_modal/), which
is very lightweight, and works on IE6, IE7, Safari and Firefox. Check
out the demos on the website, or click on any of the photos, or login
link on my site (details below)

Autopendium :: Stuff about old cars

I like the design (somehow reminds me of Roller Coaster Tycoon  =>
except for the navigation sidebar on the left. I would leave out the
transparent background image.

Thanks for the link

Looks really neat, must give it a try

I really like the design…I don’t know why other people are slagging
it off…keep doing what you’re doing, the design absoultely rocks

I don’t know why are saying that but the author should imperatively
find out a designer! he is decreasing the website potential with the
current design. And you could really make great business.

Not convinced ? take a look at designs here: http://happycodr.com/
they’re all rails projects, may some of them are business class web
app, but you can get ideas and improve greatly the site’s graphics.

One advice: think simple.

That design is totally Terrible.

BUT, it might appeal to the youth who are looking for the books
BUT …
the design takes away from your goal

the colors clash and its hard to read, counter intuitive to a site
that is to help people SELL or BUY books, therefore the site needs
first to BE readable

You have set peoples eyes off (a negative) and probably their brains
(because of the poor color choices) remember … first impressions
count.

I agree, you need some GUI Work done by a professional.

What are your users saying about the site design, if anything?

have fun …

I agree that the design really could use some professional work to
really blow this app to full potential. The forms do look clunky and
the legibility is IMHO low. I urge you take the advice of many others
and mine as well.

You have a great idea and the functionality wise I really like your
app. I wish that would’ve been available to me when I went to college.
I don’t know how big a user base you have right now. Since you just
launched I think it would be fairly small. You are not going to freak
out anybody with a more usable design, on the contrary. I’m guessing
you might still be on campus and there will be one or more designers
there, too. Get in touch and at least let them give you some pointers
and hints.
