I want to have a message board or forum in my site, I have looked at
beast but have no clue how to use svn, and I have had no luck with
savage beast either. Can anyone recommend a simple message board/forum
that I could plugin and adjust with minimal effort.

To do anything with modern Ruby you are going to need some SVN. Get a
simple SVN
client and use it to download Beast. Both systems are worth the effort.

I second learning svn. Although I also can honestly say that if all you
need is a simple message board, you may want to go with phpbb. Sure,
it’s in php but its easier to deploy, has more features and is still
entirely open source. I love ruby and rails but I find that for things
such as simple wikis or forums that sticking to more robust php
solutions is not always a bad thing.

a university project and there not helpin much
