standalone, lighttpd should be faster, but i dont think
apache2.2+mod_prox_balancer + mongrel_cluster is faster than lighty.
lighty’s mod_proxy is broken, but they’re working on it.

on a shared host, you’ll have to take what they have. if they have no
rails
support, you wont gonna have rails support (unless you know the admin)
