We’re looking for a freelance rails developer to help us out with the
development of mathpeople.statbib.org, a name disambiguation and
connection service for mathematics and statistics (and eventually other
fields, to be released under an open source license). The basic idea is
to connect disparate identifiers which refer to the same person, so that
websites can easily cross-reference one another. The current web site
is a proof of concept and we’re looking for help making it rock solid
and speedy, making it as easy as possible for data providers to add and
update their records, and enabling site users to suggest (moderated)
corrections.
In particular, we’re looking for someone with:
- experience developing web services/apis
- experience with solr
- knowledge of screen scraping and data cleaning
- great all round rails knowledge and skills
And obviously an interest in mathematics or statistics would be an
advantage. One feature that we’d like you to develop is a way for users
to easily collect photos of mathematicians from google images. For
example, how can we connect http://mathpeople.statbib.org/people/275671
to the appropriate photos from
http://images.google.com/images?&q=reverend+thomas+bayes?
Initially, we’d be looking for 10-20 hours of your time, but if we work
well together, the contract could continue for much longer and you would
have the opportunity to take a leadership role in this and other
projects.
If you’re interested please email me, [email protected], with:
- a couple of paragraphs describing your relevant experience
- a link to your portofolio
- a link to any public facing apis that you have developed, or a
description/documentation of non-public ones - your going rate and availability
Thanks,
Hadley
