Hi there
Is it necessary to make sure that indexes are rebuilt when the db is
migrated - columns added or removed? If so, can anyone tell me the best
way of automating this?

so you shouldn’t worry about adding fields later on … no need to
rebuild.

Well, it will only really matter when you put data into those columns.

If so, can anyone tell me the best way of automating this?

There’s a rake task in acts_as_ferret for reindexing entire tables.
