Goodbye for now, RoR

I started a php-based website a few months ago with a buddy of mine on
netfirms.com. I was perusing their knowledge base and I came upon a
quick-start for something called Ruby on Rails. Since then I have
immersed
myself in RoR. I’ve done the tutorials, I’ve purchased the books.

But, I could never get even a sample RoR app to work on netfirms. 500
server errors.

I’ve been dealing with their email support for two weeks now and having
trouble getting a response. Finally I’ve gotten frustrated and called
their
support. Their own support person gave me the bad news… RoR runs
painfully
slow in their environment. No they cannot install FastCGI.

I am heartbroken. RoR is the first thing I’ve come upon in my few years
of
web development that has felt EXACTLY RIGHT. But now I have no choice
but
to return to page-based PHP. I just wanted to post this as a lesson to
people… Know what you need from a host beforehand and shop carefully.
I
have the better part of a year remaining at netfirms and have no choice
but
to continue with them until my contract is up.

I’ll still be around on the mailing list, but won’t be developing in
RoR,
unfortunately. So long for now.

Seems like there are few RoR hosts out there – an additional $10/month
or so would be worth it as opposed to going back to PHP (shudder).

I was developing an online auction site with a partner when we found out
the
domain we got was channel9news.com. We had to change our whole business
model to be a news station, since the domain registration lasts all
year!
Watch out

Read his post more carefully. He’s locked into a long-term contract.

just add the company into blanklist

well at least look into www.codeigniter.com
I’d say it’s the best of the php mvc frameworks

Thank you, I will! There’s a lot of MVC frameworks for PHP out there…
I
was looking at some last night but it was too overwhelming… Of the 50+
I
didn’t see any one that stood out. I will look into this. Thanks!

Yep. He’s locked in for some percentage of a year. To a company
that doesn’t answer e-mail and won’t install FastCGI.

Rather than drop all the way back to PHP, what about Python and
something
like TurboGears or Django? If that’s starting from scratch for you,
then
perhaps not worth it but I wanted to add that thought.

Also, PHP On TRAX (http://www.phpontrax.com/) might be an easier
contextual
shift for you within the PHP realm since it is supposedly closer to
Rails.

Its too bad that the benefit of RoR doesn’t exceed the cost of 1 year’s
worth of hosting for you. If it was me, I’d be tempted to treat it as
sunk
cost and move my domain somewhere else. I respect your decision, but
perhaps
this is still an option? I think Dreamhost offers hosting for something
like $22 a year if you find the right deals online? (hint: search
Slickdeals). I haven’t tried thar route, I’m on TextDrive, but I thought
I
would mention it since its a potential low-cost out to your dilemma.

Best wishes.

I APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE FOR NOT PUTTING AN [OT] AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS
POST!

Thanks for your support!

I have to admit, I am very tempted to eat the loss. I’m not sure, maybe
in
the coming days I will. As passionate as I am about this, I have to
come to
terms with the fact that this is just a hobby for me and an idea that I
had… and I have to balance that against my family and my budget…

Now if I can find Dreamhost for $22 a year I would certainly go for
that…
Is Dreamhost good for RoR? I’ve seen it mentioned around. So far the
cheapest I’ve seen is $99 a year… textdrive I think it was.

I’m expert at Perl but the buddy I’m working with doesn’t know the
language
at all. We’re pretty good at PHP, he is alittle more then I. Neither of
us
know Python, though I have been hearing very good things about it. At
this
point it would be a bit of a leap.

I will try slickdeals to see what I can see. Thanks for the advice!

In the world of really strange questions, can you sell the remainder of
your
year of PHP on e-bay and use the money to get rails hosting?

Bill

yeah just get a better host.

code Rails apps for fun and make your next job a Rails thing.

it’s worth it!

I would think it would be difficult to seperate my hosting from our main
domain name that we opened the account with and that defines our
project…
Until our actual contract is up, that is.

You’re probably right. I guess my hesitance to go with another host at
this
point is because I really don’t want to throw good money after bad.
Will
dreamhost run a RoR site with a reasonable response? What about
textdrive?

Oo… There’s a google add for $97 off at dreamhost… Is dreamhost good
for
RoR?

You’re making a mistake. No $amount of hosting is worth forcing
yourself to code in a language you don’t want to use.

DreamHost is only $9/year with the “777” coupon.

Well… I could go into a lengthy explaination of my situation but I
won’t…
The crux of it is that through whatever combinations of salary / living
expenses we have… I don’t have hundreds of dollars to throw at servers
like
you do. Especially for a site that might not make money at all. I wish
I
did, but I just don’t.

The 777 coupon is no longer valid, as far as I know…

If you want the max discount, you can use this code: FIDGET97, it will
get
you $97 off any yearly plan

NOTE: That is my referral code, but I do not receive any money from
it–I
set it up to give you all the money off, not me–you won’t get a better
deal
than that (and if you don’t want to use my code, just google “dreamhost
discount” and you’ll find plenty of sites with codes

NetFirms is $10/month?!? Jeez, splurge a little for another host that
offers Rails. I spend hundreds of dollars a month for dedicated
servers…
