OK, so I’m going to drop into Radiant. Should I use the SVN or a
release?
I’ll probably be trying to write an extension or two but I don’t want to
deal with not even getting it off the ground problems that might exist
in
the dev version. How “dev” is dev? Can I use it at all for first-time
installation and playing or should I go with the release for that?

The dev version should work pretty well. I’d recommend that you install
via the 0.6.2 gem and then freeze, run migrations, and update:

rake radiant:freeze:edge
rake production db:migrate
rake development db:migrate
rake radiant:update
