Follow-Up on AOL JRuby Presentation

Just wanted to drop a quick note to the list thanking everybody who
gave me ideas for the JRuby presentation I gave at AOL recently. It
went very well, and it was impressive to see how many people had no
idea what JRuby brings to the table compared to MRI.

Highlights:

  • Deployment - mongrel_rails “just works”, warbler was great when it
came time to get on Ops controlled production servers
  • Java Integration - tons of existing code is in Java, was great not
to have to rewrite equivalents in Ruby.

I demoed some quick Swing examples, which people dug. Also demoed the
Rails mysql world app I did for Charlie’s presentation at JavaOne.
Showing people how easy activerecord-jdbc plugged in got a great
response, as was showing how to hook up to legacy databases.

congrats larry, can you share a copy of the presentation ?

There’s a boatload of AOL people in legal I’d have to get past, so
probably not. Ah well. But there were actually only about 8 slides. I
spent most of the time doing live code demos and answering questions.
