has anyone already successfully created an ajaxy tree based on
acts_as_nested_set which allows the user to drag-and-drop items (and of
course also save the movement) in the tree?

You can try the ‘lifetree’ plugin. But I don’t know about D&D support
for it.

Do you mean LiveTree? LiveTree | epiphyte.ca
It does not have drag and drop support right now, but is otherwise
very functional
