Debugging and ubuntu

Been running nginx for years on centos and am in the process of
migrating to an Ubuntu (raring) server.

I’ve always compiled from source before but figured I’d use the Ubuntu
apt-get install.

For whatever reason, testing is not working at all (I can serve static
but not php) and I set the error_log level to debug, but I’m still
getting notice level messages.

Does the package version not include debug (don’t see it with -V) and if
so how can I get it through the package system?

My previous CentOS migration was smooth, so I don’t know why this one
has me tearing my hair out.

There’s more than one nginx package in Ubuntu (raring).

Perhaps you haven’t installed the one you want to.

You know The CentOS Way – or you bypassed it by building yourself.

You don’t know The Ubuntu Way.

I suspect that you’ll be unhappy until you learn it, or until you learn
to bypass it.

Well I uninstalled and changed to the ppa version, which comes with
debug.

Scratching my head on this one. I created a file that has just the
phpinfo(); and looking at the debug log I can see that it appears to hit
the fastcgi (it returns an x-powered-by header) but returns a blank
page:

Again…a head scratcher since I’ve been running nginx and php-fpm for
years. Perhaps it’s worked so well that my memory is foggy from the last
time I did it.

We run Ubuntu on many servers and have come to prefer the binaries
offered
by nginx.org rather than the Ubuntu ppa’s

One advantage is that upgrades go smoother because the nginx upgrades
don’t
ask unnecessary questions.

Found this…

Added fastcgi_param PATH_TRANSLATED $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
and so far so good.
