Contracted Ruby Help

Hi everyone.

I’m new to the Ruby world and am liking it so far.

My company needs a little bit of help writing a handful of scripts to
perform various tasks. They aren’t complicated scripts, we’re just busy
with other projects.

Is this an appropriate place to post help wanted ads? If not can you
recommend a good place to look for ruby developers? I’ve checked out a
lot of typical sites, like Craigs List (Gigs), but there isn’t much ruby
action there.

Thanks.

I’ve seen people post some here, but I’ve never seen a single response.
And they generally never bother posting twice. So I’d guess this is a
particularly poor spot to try. I think mainly since this mailing list
is world-wide and you are localized to a certain city.

As for where… the standard job sites. If you want just a job done,
try a coder-for-hire type of site, or if you’re looking for a staff
member try hotjobs and places like that.

That tells me you don’t live where I do. San Diego has quite a few Ruby
on
Rails gigs.

You should confess your geographic location here, and you should attend
users groups in your area. Attend for web development, and someone there
will be learning Ruby.

You should try http://jobs.rubynow.com/

I imagine you never see replies because people would generally reply
offlist to a job offer. As for not posting twice, maybe they are just
happy with the person they hired? ;). Of course I don’t know any of this
for certain, but this isn’t necessarily a bad place to post job
offerings, and theres less chaff to weed out compared to a traditional
job site, since he knows he needs a ruby programmer.

Not to dis this posters answer, but what does “local” really mean these
days.

If a coder is “off planet”, then I would be a little worried about
latency issues, but barring that, I would say we are all “local”
nowdays.

I’ve only met two or three coders who were interesting to look at, and
in the unlikely event you need to look at one there is always video
chat.

Of all the areas of human endeavor that could divest themselves of this
silly notion of “locality”, one would think that sofware development
would be among the first.

My guess would be that it’s off-topic here.

I tend to use dice.com. One place I worked at was looking for someone,
and dice was the most expensive for the ad, but seemed to get good
results. I like dice as a job-seeker b/c there’s no ads or spam
associated with it.

Joel on Software also has a job board you might look at
http://jobs.joelonsoftware.com/ .

The rubynow.com site doesn’t have much info about itself, and still
seems somewhat beta.

Hey guys.

Thanks for the suggestions. We found some help. He repsonded off the
list.

This time around we just needed help writing a couple stand alone
scripts. Scheduled task kind of stuff.

In the future we’ll check out the recommended sites.

Most companies care, whether they should or not. All the recent Ruby
want-ads here have stated location and either said they were looking for
locals, or were willing to relocate them. Only 1 of them suggested they
might be able to work from a distance, and even they said that they were
looking for someone in their area so that occasional face-to-face
gatherings would be easier.

And I’m going to be honest… I work best in an office environment. At
least, so far. That may change over time, but since it’s always been
true, I doubt it.

I hear you there. I can only think of 1 job less restricted to
location, and that’s ‘medical transcriptionist.’ Heh.
