Configuration assistance?

I’ve got a URL scheme currently in use for our project on our dev
server. It works well, but I’m using lighttpd and the config is getting
a bit of a pain to manage.

Basically, the projects are set up as:

p1.ourdevserver.com
p2.ourdevserver.com

Which would be fine, but the directory structure is a bit of a mess.
“p1” goes to /projects/projectA, “p2” points at /projects/clientName,
etc.

Is there a way I can use variables along-side url rewriting in nginx to
simplify the config?
