Compilation on Solaris

Dear all,

I would like to set up a ferret small search engine on a Solaris
machine. Not being a Solaris expert, I’m puzzled by the error messages
I get from the C compiler. Since there in no cc on the machine I edited
the Makefile to use gcc but there is still lots of error messages:

gcc -KPIC -xO3 -xarch=v8 -xspace -xildoff -I/opt/csw/include
-I/opt/csw/include -KPIC -fno-common -I.
-I/opt/csw/lib/ruby/1.8/sparc-solaris2.8
-I/opt/csw/lib/ruby/1.8/sparc-solaris2.8 -I. -I/opt/csw/include
-I/opt/csw/include -c ferret.c
gcc: unrecognized option ‘-KPIC’
gcc: unrecognized option ‘-KPIC’
gcc: language ildoff not recognized
gcc: language ildoff not recognized
gcc: ferret.c: linker input file unused because linking not done

(This seems to repeat for every single C file.)

Does anybody know how to get the Solaris gcc to compile this? Any help
would be greatly appreciated …

Cheers,

Al.
