Best hardware / OS set up for a rails server?

I know this question is somewhat subjective, but I am pretty uninformed
as to what server would be best for hosting rails applications. I wasn’t
sure if there was an industry standard or anything. I also wanted to
make sure I got more information before I went and spent $4K on a server
and OS.

Anyways, I was thinking about 2 different options

  1. Buy a server from Dell with Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS4.

  2. Buy a mac server with Mac OSX server.

I’ve never used Mac OSX server and never seen it. But the reason I like
redhat is because of up2date and it’s a pretty well known OS. Anything
made for linux pretty much has redhat in mind. Although I do have a mac
computer and love it, so I wouldn’t expect any less of Mac OSX server.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

Buy a Sun Fire (X4100 or X4200) and install RHEL or CentOS.
You won’t be dissapointed, the ILOM* is an excelent tool and really
convenient. You can even install the OS (io redirection of the video and
cd-drive) from miles away if you have a good (ptp) connection to your
server.

*Integrated Lights Out Management, it’s a service processor, with a
HTTP[S] server that lets you manage the server and redirect the
video/cd-drive/keyboard through an applet.

I am pretty sure you will get more bang for your buck if you go with a
Dell, HP, or Sun server. Also, I prefer running SuSe 10 Enterprise
over Red Hat.
