After switching from “regular” AAF to drb based my app is no longer
handling nonlatin chars.
Any hints?

Could you have a look at the log files, especially the ferret_server.log
to see
what happens to your non-latin queries?
A possible cause is that the locale environment of the application
process (Mongrel) and the DRb server differ.
