Ferret building on Windows

Hi,

I am trying to install Ferret on Windows XP. I have Instant Rails
installed
but when I do gem install ferret I get errors related to nMake not being
installed.

Which compiler and make utilities do I need to get it to compile?

Thanks,

Keith

I’ve never used on Win32, but it’s likely to have been discussed on
ferret list: google

site:rubyforge.org/pipermail/ferret-talk “err msg here”

You need Visual C++ 6. Otherwise, install the latest win32 version;
0.10.9 I believe. Or you could wait until I compile a new win32 gem.
I’ll do that once I finish fixing some bugs I’m working on right now.
I can’t say when that will be.

No Problem, a few hours on a windows machine and I went and ordered
another
mac.

Is ferret’s focusing on making people want to buy a mac ?
It suck that you have to use a mac to play with ferret.

Why intalling ferret on a win32 is so odd ?

Its not odd really.

You need to compile various bits of c code.

Windows does not come with a C compiler, so you need one.

Buying a mac just to use ferret… not many of us could afford that.

    sure.
but it does restrict the windows users audience.
I wish it would be possible not to have to know how to compile c stuff
    for using it.
Might not be so hard but it’s something else.

I swear I get so tired of hearing the the Apple lovers who were stupid
enough to pay twice for the same computer hardware power to identify

If you go to the http://groups.google.com/group/insoshi?hl=en Insoshi
forum many people have addressed this issue who run on Windows.
Effectively, if you download the older version Ferret (1.15) that
comes compiled for the Windows machine.

mac sucks as much as windows; but we can say that we have another
intellectual elite knowing how to make ferret run on windows and not
sharing it.
i wonder why it is so difficult to find a good explanation on how to
install it.

leopard’s shipped with a broken mysql for rails, but you still find
solutions on the web even if it’s kind of hard to do it.

I got a pc and just want to install it, does anyone has a clear clue ?
can’t get a ----ing nmake on this stuff !

Most windows developers will probably have a version of visual studio
with a c++ compilier & all should be good.

You can get it to work but it takes a bit of effort & reading the
documentation.

You could try sphinx if its bugging you.

I had one developer who loved his windows & got ferret running under
cygwin - probably not for the faint hearted or those lacking in patience
& spare time.

I used to develop rail apps on a vista machine, but everything ran so
slowly [in 2GB of RAM] it drove me nuts - I tried ubuntu & decided a
switch was in order - its not as nice a mac & won’t run itunes, but it’s
in my price range.

about”.

No, you cannot get the same hardware for half a price. You can get
hardware that is cheeper, but it will be not the same.

No, desire to work on polished UNIX system has nothing to do
with trying “to identify with the intellectual elite”.

Yes it is possible to compile stuff on windows, but it is
much much easier on any unix/linux distribution.

Not sure what illusion company illegally preinstaling OS X on their
computers is
trying to challenge.
