HI,

I have spent a couple of days trying to get the Fox GUI library to
interact with ruby. Now I think I am getting close. Before I go on to
explain my problem here is some information that may be necessary.

System Information:
----------------------
MAC OS X Tiger 10.4.8
iBook G4

Software Versions:
----------------------
Ruby 1.8.1
FXRuby 1.6.5
Fox 1.6.21
RubyGems 0.9.1

Fox and FXRuby, when compiled they say they compiled succesfully, I have
also recompiled FXRuby with RubyGems, all being successful. I then go
into irb and type require 'fox16' and I get this message returned:

/sw/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin/fox16.bundle: [BUG] Bus Error
ruby 1.8.1 (2003-12-25) [powerpc-darwin]
Abort trap

Console Prints out this message at the same time:

Feb 3 15:10:14 zane-ibook-g4 crashdump[15431]: ruby1.8 crashed
Feb 3 15:10:16 zane-ibook-g4 crashdump[15431]: crash report written to:
/Users/ZaneV/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ruby1.8.crash.log

When I try require 'fox' in irb I get this message:

LoadError: No such file to load -- fox
        from (irb):1:in `require'
        from (irb):1

But I take it that as long as I can get fox16 working then this won't be
a problem.

I have trawled through website after website trying to find a fix to
this problem or some helpful information... I have have read a heap of
FXRuby documentation and some Ruby Documentation.

Please help,

Thanks,

Zane.

P.S: Here is a copy of what is writen to ruby1.8.crash.log:

Just curious: Why still running Ruby 1.8.1?

OK, that's bad. When I say that's bad, I mean, I don't recall ever
seeing ruby outright *crash* when trying to load FXRuby. It's more
common to see, for example, a failure to find one of the shared
libraries that FXRuby needs, but the error message in that case is
more descriptive than a simple "Bus Error".

Yeah, that's OK. The feature name that you should be trying to require
is 'fox16'.

Thank you for doing all of that research on your own first. Like I
said, this is a new one to me, so you aren't going to find anything
about it in the FXRuby documentation.

> P.S: Here is a copy of what is writen to ruby1.8.crash.log:

I scanned the stack trace, and it looks like the FXRuby code was
trying to call an internal Ruby function (st_lookup) when it failed. I
have a hunch that that interface has changed a bit since Ruby 1.8.1
(which is several years old now).

My advice is to upgrade to the most recent version of Ruby (1.8.5),
and then recompile FXRuby and try again. You shouldn't need to
recompile FOX -- just zap your FXRuby build directory and recompile
that part.

Good luck,

Lyle

Thanks for the reply Lyle,

I did infact try to update to 1.8.5 but I receive an error message when
I try to "make install". I run through the commands normally:
   ./configure
   make test
      >>I get a nice "test succeded"
   make install

Make Install runs through a heap of stuff nicely but then stumbles on
this:

./miniruby ./ext/extmk.rb --dest-dir="" --make="make" --mflags=""
--make-flags="" --extout=".ext" --extension --extstatic -- install
cp -r ./.ext/. /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8

make: *** [do-install-ext] Error 1

That has got me stumped... I went to the fileutils.rb script and checked
it out but I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing.

Has anyone else came across this error?

Also will I have to uninstal 1.8.1... or will 1.8.5 fix that?

Thanks,

Zane

Yes.

.ext is not created during the make process of ruby-1.8.5-p12 as it
does with ruby-1.8.4. Actually, I don't understand why...

I found why .ext is not created.

If you do:

./configure && make

then it is created, but if you do:

./configure && make test

it is not created.

So, you must do:

./configure && make && make test && make install

as stated by the README file.

I'm surprised by this behavior since generally the test rule depends
on the "build" rule.

Thanks Nicolas... that seems to work for me... though now "make install"
stops at this line:

cp -r ./.ext/. /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8

Does this mean ruby 1.8.5 was installed successfuly, I thought it would
comment if it was installed successfuly. Or does this indicate another
problem?

When I type:
 >>ruby --version

It still prints out: 1.8.1.

I have also noticed I have 3 ruby directories:

/sw/lib/ruby/1.8
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8
/usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8

The first directory (/sw/lib/ruby/1.8) I think is the original(1.8.1)
because I remeber seeing it there before attempting to install version
1.8.5. I know that the last directory (usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8) is the
new one which was created when attempting to install 1.8.5 and I am not
sure about the second directory (/usr/lib/ruby/1.8), wether it is new or
old.

Anyways, I am making a bit of progress now and thanks a lot for all your
help so far.

No, that's fine.

Check that /usr/local/bin appears first in your PATH env var.

You might be right. If you didn't specify --prefix to the configure
script it uses /usr/local as default value.
