USRP E100 login: Ethernet and USB?

Hello list,

We got the USRP E100 and tried to log in via the USB console, following
the
instructions in:
http://code.ettus.com/redmine/ettus/projects/usrpe1xx/wiki/FAQ

However, the USRP E100 is not detected according to dmesg. And our PC
host
does not establish a /dev/ttyUSB0.

BTW, is it possible to log in via the Ethernet?

Anyone who had experience with E100 please help! Thank you!

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply!

Right. The dmesg outputs nothing. I’m running Ubuntu 10.04. There is
no
such directory /dev/ttyUSB0.

To log in via Ethernet, what is the default IP for the E100?

Thanks!

Really? It doesn’t see anything at all? What host OS are you running,
and are you running daemons like hal and/or udev?

Yes, you should be able to SSH into the E100 as root over Ethernet.
Just make sure you give the E100 time to boot up before trying.

Cheers,
Ben

Right. The dmesg outputs nothing. I’m running Ubuntu 10.04. There is no
such directory /dev/ttyUSB0.

It isn’t /dev/ttyUSB0 on all systems - the file-device naming depends
on a lot of things that are system-specific. On many Fedora systems,
for example, it maps to something other than USB0.

I don’t use Ubuntu, so I can’t speak to how it might get mapped there.
Regardless, if dmesg isn’t printing anything, something else is amiss.

Just as a quick check, make sure udev is running:

$ ps -ef | grep udevd

There isn’t a ‘default IP’ - it runs a dhclient and asks your gateway
for an IP. If you don’t have a better way of network discovery, you
could have your router dump the DHCP table and you should be able to
deduce which one is your E100 =)

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks a lot for your help. We’ve made it work by enabling the DHCP
server on our PC host. We haven’t made the USB work yet. We’ll try it
later.

/dev/ttyACM0 is another popular naming scheme. Apparently, USB serial
devices manifest with
two slightly different USB “profiles”, and Linuxen name them
differently.

The serial to USB part on the E100 is powered from the USB cable. If you
do not see the serial to USB interface appear in dmesg, check that you
are using a usb connection the provides power.

Hi Philip,

I see. We used a powerless USB cable. That’s very likely to be the
reason
why the PC doesn’t recognize it. We’ll try externally powered USB cable
once
we get one.

Thank you for your help.
