Rails 1.2.3 isn't doing things for me as it should, so I decided to freeze to edge. I prefer edge anyway, and i get this error. Happens in both Mongrel and Webrick. I had a similar problem last week. It might be that your gems executable is a) not up to date b) not at the right location might be in /opt/local/lib/ but is expected in /usr/local/bin I had two versions one in /opt/local/lib and one in /usr/local/bin the one in /opt/local/lib was broken so I just did #/opt/local/lib/ :> ln -s /usr/local/bin/gem . and that worked out for me.
