How I can make my rails application auto-start it's corresponding
backgroundrb process?

Is it as simple as finding a way to execute the unix shell command from

Right now I need to manually run "rake backgroundrb:start".

My only other thought is a cron task that calls a script that checks
running processes and runs "rake backgroundrb:start" if needed, but that
doesn't seem very elegant.

I start backgroundRb with my app server.
Eg. for development I use script/server, so everything you need is add a
line of code to server script.
