Hi fellow RoR users,

I am a South African software developer with a company that specializes
in Java development. I am currently trying to introduce RoR, which I
have experimented with and like very much. One question that I’m
constantly confronted with is: “How much of a support base is there for
Ruby/Rails locally - i.e. in South Africa?” So I’m trying to put
together a list of South African Ruby and/or Rails developers,
companies, and projects to use as a weapon against the dark forces that
refuse to acknowledge the validity of RoR as a cool and beautiful thing.
😉

If you are based in South Africa, I would really appreciate it if you
could let me have a short summary of your experiences and list of your
projects using Rails (with URLs if possible). Also, if you know of
anyone else within the borders of South Africa who is using either Ruby
or Rails, I would be grateful if you could send me their contact details
or any information. In return, I would be happy to share my findings
with you if you are interested.

Regards,
Gopal.

Hi, I’m in Cape Town as well and recently started with Rails. Usually we
deal with SAP systems.

Hi Gopal,

I remember you from the IDLELO conference. Hope you are well.

Nice to see that you are using Rails. I am not in South Africa, but
am located in Ghana. Here in Ghana, we are going to introduce school
kids to Ruby as a first language in a competition called “I Too Can
Program”. Before they used QBasic and it resulted in awful code as
well as confused students. In our Advanced Information Technology
Institute, they are using RoR internally and will soon start teaching
it as well (hopefully!). I recommended this to them because RoR is
being adopted worldwide as a better way to do things, and we could
for once be at the front of the revolution instead of tagging along
in the back.

Maybe you can tell your folks over there, that we in Ghana are
grateful to South Africa for conceding the lead and allowing us to
take over 🙂 Not to mention that even in India, they haven’t yet
began to cotton on.

– G.
