Hello,

I’m going to order a dedicated server for my RoR application, but
don’t know which nix distro is the best for hosting RoR application?

Debian Etch, Ubuntu 6.06 or 6.10, Fedora Core 5 or 6?

Thanks in advance,

- Dunnil

In general… they’ll all host Ruby on Rails about the same. The better
question is, which distro is your server administrator most comfortable
with. This is where you’ll see the most benefits in your choice.

I completely agree with this. Use the distro/database/webserver/etc…
you’re most comfortable with.

You might also look at using Freebsd; OpenBSD might cause problems with
some gems.

The deprec gem is cool; I’ve been playing around with it lately. It
works with Ubuntu and makes the work of setting everything up a
breeze: [http://deprec.rubyforge.org/](http://deprec.rubyforge.org/)

I don’t know if it works with 7.04 or not, though; I think I’ll set it
up tonight just to see…

Hi Michael,

I strongly recommend Debian Etch, unless you are using the very latest
ubunbtu. It is just like ubuntu, except that you can use apache 2.2
and subversion in their more recent versions without compiling from
source (you can get them from apt-get). I have setup both a rails
debian etch box (recently), and a dapper drake box. The current
Ubuntu that is coming out/just came out will have these programs in
apt-get, so as long as it is the latest, it is a non-issue.

Eric
