# Problems with will\_paginate gem

Given that ‘classic\_pagination’ is now deprecated, I decided to  
install the ‘will\_paginate’ gem.

I typed:

sudo gem install will\_paginate

The install went ahead with no messages. I now have will\_paginate  
(2.2.2) showing up in my gem list.

The document states that will\_paginate extends ActiveRecord::Base by  
adding the ‘paginate’ method and others to ActiveRecord:Base. I have  
a class Credential that subclasses from ActiveRecord::Base, so I  
thought I should be able to invoke a paginate class method in the  
form

@cred = Credential.paginate \<\>

When I run this code under Mongrel, I get a ‘method\_missing’  
exception. It appears that will\_paginate is not working. Can someone  
point me in the right direction?

I tried to add the two lines as shown at the end of config/  
environment.rb, but the server would not start with " gem ‘mislav-  
will\_paginate’, ‘~2.2’ "

I changed that line to read ‘gem will\_paginate’, ‘~\>2.2’, and the  
server starts but the paginate method is still missing. I don’t  
understand the need for the gem statement.

BTW, you mentioned a will\_paginate readme.doc. Can you point me to  
that? I have never seen that file. It did not get installed with the  
gem.

Just add a simple require to the end of  
“config/environment.rb”:

gem ‘mislav-will\_paginate’, ‘~\> 2.2’  
require ‘will\_paginate’

did you follow these intructions?

the instruction is: “Just add a simple require  
to the end of config/environment.rb”

that means in the end of the file, AFTER the  
initializer call.

Thanks for pointing me to the readme.doc. I followed the instructions  
and installed gem ‘mislav-will\_paginate’ and am still having  
problems.  
Sorry for the long post, but here is a snapshot of what I am trying  
to debug:

Here is the list method of credential\_controller.rb:
