Hi.

I’ve depolyed my first RoR site, on textdrive, shared server. I was so
happy! my first site is up. A new baby born.

There’s barely any traffic to my site (I currently have 130 users).
However it seems that every time I point my browser to my site I find
myself praying that it will actually be online. And I’m not even a
religious man…

so about 75% of the times it’s there and 25% I get a timeout, and it
makes me very mad. I submit a ticket and get some random answer like
“sorry, somebody on your server deleted their log files so we had to
restart the web server, etc…”. I understand that shit happens, and
that I only paid for a shared server but is it too much to ask to have
my site ONLINE almost all the time?? I don’t even talk about speed here.

After all the setup and work I done on their server I now need to find a
new hosting company and go through the whole deal again. And maybe the
new host will be bad too…

advice is very welcomed and appreciated.

Alonzo.

Shared hosting really just isn’t going to be reliable for your app.
Topfunky recently did a nice review of Rails hosting options:

I would recommend going w/ a VPS (provided you’re able to manage one
yourself). Personally, I’ve been using Slicehost for several months
and have had a great experience with them.

Thanks a lot. that link is a good resource (and also good to know there
are many others suffering from the same problems I do with textdrive, so
I’m not crazy). I never heard of VPS but I’ll take a look at what that
really means soon and if I’m able to set it up myself.

thanks again

If you are not comfortable managing a full server (or VPS) then shared
hosting can be your solution. Take a look at [SpeedyRails.com](http://SpeedyRails.com) (I work
there so receive my apologies in advance for the chimes) and you will
find a reliable shared hosting. There are also fully managed dedicated
servers in case you need even better performance, but again, the
service is fully managed so you don’t have to know about linux,
apache, mongrel, etc… you can concentrate in your application and
your business (surely they are the same thing 😉 ) and SpeedyRails’
team will do the admin work for you.
