Different error 500 page for ajax errors

I’m looking for a way to handle application errors that occur while
processing an ajax request in a different way then just showing
public/500.html. The problem is that the default error page breaks my
layout if it’s just delivered “as is” in instead of the regular output
from the ajax request.

Any suggestion appreciated.

Best wishes
