B. S. essential. If that rang up as ‘bubble sort’ or better still
Bjarne Stroustrup, then read on.

We are looking for a funny, intuitive, out-of-the box thinker and risk-
taker…Ruby expertise would be good too. Most importantly, you can
read our functional requirements, understand how these need to be
presented to the user, then throw out our 75-page SRS and let your
imagination take over.

We are a small, NYC-based organization that needs you to design and
build our online exchange. We see the world very differently and hope
to portray that in everything we do…. from an intuitive, user-friendly
site, its fantastic front-end design by a freelance designer (who
doesn’t work for the man) to its unique function that will reduce
pollution.
Join us and let’s partner to make this happen. You will not work for
us remotely…but may work with us from anywhere in the world. We love
small, independent developers and would prefer to work with them
directly. Agents, headhunters, “project managers”, consultants, and
anyone planning on getting rich, off someone else’s work, more power
to you, but please excuse. We hope to have this prototype done by
Aug15, 2010, tested and ready for transactions by Oct 15. Our budget
for this is $3k and we are estimating a total 125 – 150 hours. We
will move onto designing the full site immediately thereafter, so it’s
important that you care about what we are hoping to do and see us as
your partner.

P. S. redundant stuff that is probably worth mentioning, knowledge of
query design (via SQL/Rails), REST, SOAP and some basic stuff:
relational databases, Javascript, xhtml.

We hope you are not so jaded to see this fun and thoughtful posting as
a scam.

Good, because it appears that this posting contains a lot of it. 😃

I understand that you wanted to do an out-of-the-box job posting, but
this doesn’t seem to give much info about what you’re really looking
for…

So…you’re looking for a C++ algorithm guru? Why post here, then?

So why do you have the 75-page SRS if you want it thrown out?

Er…what difference does it make if your designer “work[s] for the
man”? I understand idealism, but this I don’t get.

That part sounds good.

So if you’re in NYC and I’m working with you from elsewhere, how is that
_not_ working remotely?

“Please excuse”? What does that mean?

You want a rockstar Rails developer in NYC for $20/hour? You want this
all done in 3-4 weeks?!? Riiiiiiiight.

How is mentioning technical skis redundant?

I don’t think it’s a scam (or at least I didn’t until you pointed out
that it could be). I _do_ think that the job posting is unclear and
that you are expecting to get this done in an unrealistically short
amount of dev time on an unrealistically low budget. Good luck.

Marnen,
Sorry that we could not provide more info…crazy thing called
liability. The Bjarne Stroustrup initials were meant only to
illustrate that B. S. does not always stand for Bachelor of Science.

Again, throwing out the SRS was not meant literally…a given set of
functions can be designed in multiple ways, right?

There are still some islands of idealism in the world that, when
married with capitalism have very different results from traditional
business models - if you don’t get this, this is perhaps not for you.

Glad you agree that reducing pollution sounds good (and not just
idealism).

There is a world of difference in ‘working for someone and with
someone.’…again the difference though subtle in its construction
is quite profound in principle. Yes, working remotely is what we are
looking for…in this partnership.

Please excuse - means please don’t bother submitting if you are not
working on this project directly in some capacity.

Here, we are completely wrong and want to acknowledge your
insight…a rockstar RoR developer will be able to get this done in
substantially less than 100 hrs. Be that as it may, we are glad to
discuss more appropriate compensation.

The schedule is still valid and 100 hrs. b/w 6/15 and 8/15 is what we
are looking for…

I read a lot of posts on this forum and gathered from the slightly
more insightful developers that query design, relational databasing,
REST, SOAP is implicit when you are talking to a RoR expert. If I
have misunderstood this - I stand corrected.

If you are still not convinced that this is not a scam, then, I am
sorry for wasting your time.

As mentioned above, the budget is perhaps too low, and we are happy to
discuss something more commensurate with the effort.
