I’m trying to setup a mongrel cluster. I’m relying on information
collected from a number of sources but I’m relying heavily on
[http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/apache.html](http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/apache.html).

I have noted that a number of sources mention the necessity of having
the mod\_balancer module installed in Apache. However, my primary
source makes no mention of this; but instead, mentions only the
requirement of having the mod\_proxy\_balancer module installed. I’m
confused. In an effort to resolve the confusion, I’m hypothesizing
that the references I’ve read to mod\_balancer were really just mal
formed references to mod\_proxy\_balancer. I know, it’s a stretch, but
I really don’t know how else to resolve the apparent conflict. Can
someone please resolve the issue for me? Is there really a
mod\_balancer module that needs to be installed; or, is the
mod\_proxy\_balancer module sufficient? Thanks for any input.

What version of Apache? I use mod\_proxy\_balancer on 2.2.x.

Thanks for the input. I’m using Apache 2.2.3. If you could just
please verify that you have a cluster working with the
mod\_proxy\_balancer module installed and with no module identified as
mod\_balancer installed, I think that would pretty much put the issue
to bed for me. Thanks.

P.S. I thought I had replied before; but, I guess something went
amiss. Thanks again.

I have both 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 working with mongrel\_cluster.

I posted my notes and comments on my blog at [http://www.rubyhead.com](http://www.rubyhead.com)
(sorry about shameless self-promotion).

I’m pretty sure your suspicion is right. mod\_proxy\_balancer is what
you need. There is no mod\_balancer AFAIK. BTW, this works great and is
easy to configure with mongrel\_cluster.
