Meet The Guru

Resource Guru is a market-leading product used by smart organisations around the world to master their team’s time. Customers include NASA, Ikea, Publicis, Accenture, Red Hat, KPMG, Pirelli, M&C Saatchi, VMware, Ogilvy, PwC, Virgin Media and the NHS. They all trust Resource Guru to handle one of their most precious assets - their people’s time.

We are a small, remote team with employees in the UK and Europe. This means you would be free to work from anywhere with a good internet connection and a 4 hour time overlap with GMT business hours. We live in Slack, have daily video standups and meet up occasionally to work together and celebrate achievements. We’re a friendly team and like to think of ourselves as a family :) See if this is the right place for you.

Resource Guru is built with TypeScript, Node.js and Go. Some legacy Ruby is being migrated to our modern stack. Frontend code is built with Preact. Our application is hosted using Google Kubernetes Engine. We like agility, work in sprints and iterate on features.

Requirements

In Brief

We are looking for a software engineer with a minimum of 3 years of experience building web applications. If you also have a particular interest in technical disciplines such as Test Driven Development, pair programming, and you can communicate clearly with other engineers on your team, you’d be a great candidate!

If your skills align towards either frontend or backend and you’re looking to develop full stack skills, we’d be happy to share this knowledge with you. We have a team of senior developers who are keen to mentor and support your growth.

You will join a team responsible for building features, solving technical issues and delivering a delightful user experience for our customers. You must be highly motivated, disciplined with your time and be willing to learn from your colleagues as you collaborate.

We value high quality, cleanly architected code that is well tested and easily maintainable. We encourage pair programming across the team, using TDD, and automating tasks where possible. You’ll use modern tooling like TypeScript and Node.js, backed by a MySQL database.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • You will work closely with your team lead as you build and improve the backend and frontend applications that power Resource Guru.
  • Participate in the design process of every feature you work on - from brainstorming to prototyping to reviews and polish.
  • Learn from and share your knowledge/expertise with other team members.
  • Review code submissions from other engineers and be open to having your own work critiqued - we encourage our team to work together and trust that you can lean on each other’s strengths.
  • You’ll be responsible for deploying and running your code in production. We use Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes to host our application
  • What We’re Looking For

    • Attention to detail. Given that our customers rely on the accuracy of data in Resource Guru for business-critical operations, we’re pedantic about the quality of the work we do. We’re looking for developers who are able to manage the finer details of software development to deliver a good quality product.
    • We believe great engineers aren’t limited by a toolset, in fact our team is excited to hear about solutions to interesting problems using tools outside of our normal stack. TypeScript, Node.js, Go and Ruby on Rails experience is beneficial but those are not prerequisites for applying.
    • We don't require a degree in Computer Science, but a keen interest in Computer Science is important.
    • We’re passionate about building clean, maintainable code and we apply practices like TDD and CI to accomplish this.
    • We’re looking for 3 years of professional experience working on web software.
    • A good understanding of how web software works, built with HTML, JavaScript and any backend server stack.
    • Experience with either relational or NoSQL databases is beneficial.
    • Open to international travel. We don’t get together often, but when we do, it’s lots of fun! At the moment, we’re connecting in person once a year. This may change.
    • You will be more pragmatic than dogmatic.
    • Benefits

      • A great salary (negotiable)
      • Stock options
      • Work from anywhere you like (with at least 4 hrs overlap with GMT business hours) - coworking space will be provided if necessary
      • 5 weeks personal holiday + 6 public holidays + Dec 24 - Jan 1 company holiday
      • Birthday off + house move day off
      • Flexible hours
      • Annual training and conference allowance (£4,000)
      • £1,000 office equipment contribution upon joining (then every 3 years)
      • Monthly health wellbeing contribution - to be used as you see fit
      • Pension contribution.
      • A chance to be part of one of the UK’s most successful startups
      • International travel - we host Guru Gatherings where we all get a chance to see each other in HD ;) Past locations have included Budapest, Dublin and London
