still relevant in Ruby 1.9?

If so, how does this work with GLib::MainLoop.new and implicit
mainloops created with, for example, Gtk::Dialog.run?

AFAIK, yes. The problem is not ruby, but GTK, which is not thread-safe.

I have no idea, it's too bare metal for me.
