Announcement (2017-05-07): www.ruby-forum.com is now read-only since I unfortunately do not have the time to support and maintain the forum any more. Please see rubyonrails.org/community and ruby-lang.org/en/community for other Rails- und Ruby-related community platforms.

The JRuby community is pleased to announce the release of JRuby 1.2.0!

Homepage: http://www.jruby.org/
Download: http://dist.codehaus.org/jruby/

JRuby 1.2.0 has fixed many many compatibility issues and continued to
improve general performance. Due to popular demand we have a new
versioning
system. 1.x.y was our old number system where x was the major release
and y
was the minor release. Our new system just chops off the vestigial '1.'
from
the front. 1.3, 1.4, ..., 1.x will just be minor releases of our
current
major release.

Highlights:
- Improved Ruby 1.9 support (via --1.9)
  - Compiler now works
  - Almost all of the missing 1.9 methods have been added
- New experimental --fast flag which does more aggressive optimizations
- Large scale compiler and runtime cleanup and performance audit
- Parsing is 3-6x faster now.
- Preliminary android support (Ruboto)
- Rails pathname issue fixed on Windows
- Major bug triage since last release
- 1052 revisions since 1.1.6
- 256 bugs fixed since 1.1.6

In addition to thanking everyone in the JRuby community who always
helps us improve JRuby,
we also want to give a special thanks to all those who gave us
feedback during the release
candidate phase. This helped us find a number of serious blockers.

I know you've probably put a lot of thought in making this decision,
but I am still wondering if matching the CRuby version system would
not make more sense. That would allow users to know right away the
correlation between the 2 projects. Indeed, it might make things a bit
more complex for JRuby which is releasing more often, but I think a
x.y.z.w versioning would solve this too.

Just to give an example:

Ruby 1.8.4 => JRuby 1.8.4.x
Ruby 1.9 => JRuby 1.9 (you can use a 1.9b for indicating that it is
not complete).

cheers,

I don't think that makes sense, since JRuby 1.2.0 supports both Ruby 1.8
and
Ruby 1.9 syntax. Also the complete JRuby version string is very clear
about
the parallel MRI version:

~% jruby -v
jruby 1.1.6 (ruby 1.8.6 patchlevel 114) (2008-12-17 rev 8388)
[i386-java]

(Yes, shame on me for not updating my laptop to 1.2.0 yet :)

Regards,
Martijn

Indeed, that's something I don't know how to solve :).

jruby -v is extremely useful, but it works only after downloading and
trying it out, while my suggestion would not require any downloads (in
fact these 2 will just live together making it simple for everyone).

The suggestion is to change the jruby versioning scheme to save the
time it takes to download the binary and get all that information from
the "-v" switch? That's a pretty heavy-handed "solution" for a minor
problem.

Put me down for "thinks the jruby version scheme finally makes sense;
don't change it."

Agreed. If it's really that big a deal, can't we put the output of -v on
the download site (for the packaged/released version)?

Tell you what, guys...we need a better landing page for jruby.org
anyway, so perhaps when we move to kenai.com we can talk about putting
up a nice set of front pages like http://rubini.us has. Then we can list
appropriate version information there.

I can't find the 1.9 lib in the jruby-bin packages. Consequently,
jirb doesn't work in 1.9 mode.

Hmmm, yeah it looks like the bin distribution does not have 1.9 core
files. We will fix this for 1.3.

Jirb does not work in jruby 1.2, but we are working on it...and it will
for 1.3,

Oops. That's my fault. I added 1.9 stdlib but didn't update the dist
logic. Oh well, we'll do 1.3 in a month or two and it will all be there.
For best results, just pull JRuby trunk/master and build it. It all
works, and it's all there.
