Apache installation ... Status: 500 Internal Server Error

I think I will give up the apache installation after 10 hours on this.

  1. run dispatch.cgi from command line, it reports:
    Status: 500 Internal Server Error
trace it all the way to:
    /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-0.14.3/lib/dispatcher.rb

if I comment this line, it will not complain about 500. But it still
    does not work:
    ActionController::Routing::Routes.recognize!(request).process(request,
    r
    esponse).out(output)

  2. in .htaccess file, should it be:
    RewriteRule ^(.)$ dispatch.cgi?$1 [QSA,L]
    or
    RewriteRule ^(.
    )$ dispatch.cgi?$1 [QSA,L]
    is the $1 necessary.

All in all, I hate the 500 error…

Can you give us the complete trace?

is the $1 necessary.
Where is the difference?

Are you trying to use FCGI?
What is your OS?
